When Teddy Roosevelt was asked to speak at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, on June 2, 1897, he presented a theme about readiness. He said that the only way to maintain peace was to be ready to fight, and the only way to prepare was to enlarge the Navy. The speech was very patriotic and uplifting. The following February, the Maine ship was attacked, which killed 264 crew members, and Americans across the country exclaimed, "Remember the Maine event!" In April 1898, President McKinley asked the Congress to declare war. Surprisingly, Teddy Roosevelt resigned from his position as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, three weeks after the war statement. He did it so he could join the Navy soldiers. His friends said he was crazy because he squandered his position in politics. His wife also opposed it. However, everyone who knew Teddy Roosevelt well knew that their protest was in vain. Later he wrote that he did it so he could tell his children why he was at war, not why he didn't go to war. As far as he knows, one's actions must be in harmony with his words.
Participating in war is different from seeing war. When we go to war and experience victory, we will be called winners. Winners obviously have different levels than people who just watch an audience. Teddy Roosevelt left the position of Assistant Secretary of the Navy, joined the war, and finally got the position of President of the United States to replace McKinley.
In our spiritual life, we should also prepare ourselves, to participate in the awesome divine movement. Don't just want to be an audience. Let's get involved. The most likely position to experience the extraordinary movement is to be in the movement itself, and not to watch the movement happen. When we get involved, we will become soul winners, and God will bring us up to a higher level of glory. Amen.
