When we encounter problems in our lives, most of us will feel helpless. When help seems far away, the problem will seem as though getting bigger and our guts becoming smaller, while our heart feels so stuffed. This situation reminds us of the Israelites when they faced Goliath (1 Sam. 17). There were two kinds of responses in the story. King Saul and the people of Israel were frightened and some of them fled from the battlefront. It was only natural for them to be frightened because Goliath was 3 meters tall with a complete armor with him. However, David, a young Israeli shepherd, responded to the challenge with faith, he even encouraged Saul to not lose heart. In faith, David offered himself to face Goliath and the rest is history. Why did Saul and David respond differently? It is because David had an enlarged capacity in his heart for the word of God than Saul and the rest of the Israelites.
In our case, the Goliath we are dealing with may not be a physical giant but a giant of problems, pressures or challenges that seem so big and frightening. It may be pressures from family, school, work, or ministry, which leave us panic-stricken and hopeless.
As David did, we must also enlarge our heart's capacity for the word so that we're able to overcome life's oppression and emerge a winner. Just believe God for wisdom to overcome life's oppression and we will experience an extraordinary life with God.
